Stay or Leave: The True Love Dilemma

There's something I've been considering for a long time after many long, fruitless discussions with ever-opinionated Jackie: should a guy stay or leave if his presence puts you in danger? The one who is willing to leave, no matter how much it would hurt him, or the one who could never bear to leave you, no matter if his being there risks your life or not? There are so many arguments on both sides that I think I really need an outside view beyond the two of us.

The One Who Leaves:

• is more concerned for your safety than his own feelings
• would rather the two of you have broken hearts than put you in danger
• isn't clingy

The One Who Stays:

• is extremely confident in his ability to protect you
• could never leave you, no matter what
• loves you more than life itself

Both of these have many counterarguments, though. For example: 

Does the Leaver Really Love You If:

• he's able to leave 
• he's willing to break your heart
• he perhaps is not really that attached to you

On the other side of that coin: 

Does the Stayer Really Love You If: 

• he's possibly overconfident or cocky in his ability to protect you
• he's willing to risk your life for his happiness
• he's so very attached to you that he won't leave your side (which would be very annoying)

After so very many arguments with Jackie, I'm really not so sure which side I'm on anymore. :) But it is interesting to consider the two sides of the coin. What do you think?
